-Charges lawmakers on payment of overdue bursary, scholarship

The Board of Trustees (BOT) of the National Union of Lagos State Students (NULASS), has callef for calm and prevention of breakdown of law and order in the Lagos State House of Assembly following the removal of the former Speaker, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa and his replacement with the Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda.
The situation degenerated into the DSS and police allegedly invading the Assembly complex on Monday trying to prevent breach of peace, a report which the House has denied.
In a statement by the NULASS BOT Executives – Comrade Mayegun Olawale (Chairman), Comrade Ojoare M. Bolaji (General Secretary) and Comrade Alliu Mubarak Adekunle (PRO), the body which has one of its objectives the Lagos cultural heritage, charged members of the Assembly and staff to ensure that there is no breakdown of law and order that would prevent the state from maintaining its leadership roles amongst others.

“In 5 years of existence, the leadership of B.O.T (NULASS) has been advocating for the protection of Lagos Culture and Heritage. The incident which happened on Monday, 17th February 2025, at the Lagos State House of Assembly is unpleasant to our State and Lagosians at large, being the pace setter for other states in all ramifications.
“B.O.T. NULASS, as one of the stakeholders in Lagos State, passionately appeals to all the political gladiators, Elected Members and Staff of the Lagos State House of Assembly to ensure all hands are on deck to maintain our dignity as the Foremost State in Nigeria.

“We are very much concerned about the potential disruptions, pandemonium, and unrest at the State Assembly. Consider this as a call for peaceful and respectful conduct.
“The National Union of Lagos State Students (NULASS) is calling for maintenance of law and order at the Lagos State House of Assembly due to a change in leadership which can sometimes lead to uncertainty, tensions, and power struggles, which can also disrupt the normal functioning of the Assembly. It is understandable that NULASS witnessed the peaceful transition that was unanimously done through the simple majority of the House.

“We urge all the elected members of the state assembly to prevent any potential violence or unrest.
“Moreso, to ensure that the Assembly’s business is conducted without disruption, threat to life, or intimidation.” the NULASS BOT said.
Meanwhile, the executive body of Lagos students which cut across the five Divisions in the state, has also charged state lawmakers on the need to give quality representation.

“The students’ body called on the representatives to use their oversight function is seeing to it that students that have been denied bursary and scholarship for the 2022/2023 session are paid. In addition, the union is also calling for the appointment of a new Executive Secretary for the Lagos State Scholarship Board.
“We equally through this medium advocate for quality representation and legislation on salient issues like existing Students Educational Support Scheme (Bursary and Scholarship for some 2022/2023 beneficiaries who are yet to be Paid, 2023/2024 set which is overdue for payment and other related issues.

“More importantly, the appointment of the New Executive Secretary of the Board will change the status quo. This will enhance the effective representation of students’ interests, responsible and responsive leadership, peaceful and respectful conduct among others. Prioritization of community needs and welfare packages won’t be left behind.
“By pushing for these quality representation, BOT NULASS aims to ensure that the voices of students and the community are heard and valued in the decision-making process”, NULASS BOT emphasized.
