Recognising the important roles of history, the Graceskies School, Elepe Estate, Aga, in Ikorodu Area of Lagos State, Southwest, Nigeria, on Friday, celebrated the Black History Day, a day set aside for the students of the school to know more about black heroes and heroines.
The occasion also presented opportunity for the students and pupils of the private school located within the highbrow estate, to be mentored and get inspired by the achievements of these historical figures.

At the highly educative ceremony held at the school, selected students presented profiles of choice personalities stating his or her contributions to humanity.
Some of the heroic personalities that the students spoke about were Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Obafemi Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikwe , Funmilayo Ransome Kuti, MKO Abiola, Barack Obama, Nelson Mandela, Winnie Mandela , Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, Tobi Amusan, Asisat Oshoala, Ademola Lookman, Anthony Joshua, Oprah Winfrey, Desmond Tutu, Wole Soyinka and Folorunso Alakija among others

According to the school administrator, Ms Adebola Ogunniyi, the event is a yearly programme dedicated to the celebration of these figures with purpose of educating and inspiring the students to greatness.
“It’s a yearly programme in celebration of Black achievements in various fields around the world. It’s set aside to celebrate black heroes living and dead.
“”The pupils/students picked their favorite hero/heroine and gave a detailed biography and achievements of each.

To teach the children where we are coming from, the sacrifices of our past heroes, and what we can achieve irrespective of our skin color,” she said.
Some of the students that participated expressed their happiness at the opportunity to read and know about these figures and how they have shaped not only the history of the black race but that of humanity.
