In order to impart computer knowledge in youths in Igbogbo Kingdom, starting from the primary school level, the Igbogbo Youth Coalition (IYC) has donated a computer centre to United African Methodist Church (Eleja), Igbogbo in Igbogbo/Bayeku Local Council Development Area (LCDA).

The centre, which has about 10 computer system donated by the outgoing IYC administration led by Comrade Kazeem Ogunmuyiwa, was commissioned last Thursday,

At the commissioning were the Education Secretary, Ikorodu LG, chieftains of the Igbogbo Students’ Union, and other stakeholders.

Comrade Kazeem Ogunmuyiwa, the outgoing President, IYC, was full of appreciation and thanks to the stakeholders and the management of the UAMC (Eleja) Primary School, Igbogbo, especially the Head of the school and her assistant.

He described members of his executive council and the 2024 IYC electoral committee as people that are delivering selfless ad committed services to the development of the community.

Ogunmuyiwa, speaking further, said that IYC is giving back to the society with the Computer Room and also impacting on the development of the youths.

“We are not here for ceremony, rather, we are here to support our wonderful kids. We are here to aid their educational development.

“Getting to where I am today is not my effort, is not by my efforts. Likewise each and every other stakeholder here. Rather, it was the collective efforts of other people that supported our growth, so, we are also giving back today.

“We didn’t choose to do this because we have the resources, but because we thought there should be a way to give back to the community.

“In doing that, we look at something that will be impactful on our youths. We have the intention to get across to about four schools before we handover after our two year tenure, but circumstances do not permit us.

“During our tenure that is coming to an end, we were able to tour all the schools with the President of the Igbogbo Students’ Union, and through this, we were able to gather data.

“During the tour, we were also able to see that there are so many challenges in our primary schools and part of the way of resolving some of these, is by introducing ICT in our primary schools, so that our pupils can start learning computer science.

“ln some schools, JSS I students lack the knowledge of ICT, and they also said that they have not been exposed to it.

“Once we were able to determine the challenges, we thought that we should be able to introduce solutions at the primary school level and I took up the challenge alongside my team, to create opportunity for our young ones.

“Since we created this access, and to God be the glory, there are pupils who have been wonderful – two of them especially and one of them is Amirat who has shown good knowledge of computer. From what I can deduce here today, she would be better if she is provided with more opportunities”, Ogunmuyiwa said.

A member of the Coalition, Ms. Kolejo Fathia, said that IYC is intervening in educational development because government alone cannot do it all.

“As a coalition, we feel this is one of the things that we can give back to our community. We shouldn’t wait for the government to do everything for us. We, at the Igbogbo Youth Coalition, don’t just criticize government, but we also make efforts to start the change that we want to see.

“We want an environment where our students are not just going to learn but where they can acquire quality and technologically driven education. We want them to be technologically smart”, she said.

Ms. Fathia also assured that the lYC will not stop in its quest to provide computer room in other chools in Igbogbo.

Mrs Adeyemi, Head Teacher UAMC (Eleja) Primary School, commended members of the IYC for complimenting the government’s efforts by providing the Computer Centre for the school.

She said that the effort of the coalition will prevent pupils in her school from going to the Methodist Church Igbogbo, where there is an ICT Centre to learn computer and also make them literate in computer education.

” Initially, we have just one centre at Ikorodu where all the schools around visit for computer studies, but it has now been decentralilised. There is another one that is very close to us; that is at Methodist Primary School where our pupils attend for computer training.

“This that you have provided for us will make our pupils to be computer literate. It will go a long way in complimenting the efforts of the government”, she said.

While appealing for more computer systems so as to enable the teachers adequately teach their pupils, the school head also appealed to the IYC and entire Igbogbo community for security in the school to prevent theft.

The Education Secretary, Local Government Education Authority (LGEA), lkorodu, Mr Afolabi Amusa, also thanked the Igbogbo youths for the donation of the centre and assured them that the school will put it into good use.

He was represented by Mrs Lambo Kafilat.

He also emphasized the request of the UAMC school head for security in the school to prevent activities of hoodlums and theft.
