In a bid to further consolidate the campaign against sexual harassment and domestic violence in the university and the society at large, the Department of Mass Communication, Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), has taken the awareness to students.

According to Dr Steve Adesemoye, Head of Department, Mass Communication, LASUSTECH, the step is aimed at raising awareness and sensitize the students on the importance of speaking out against these heinous crimes.

The Head of the Department, during a one-day seminar held at Mass Communication Department, to commemorate the year 2024 Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness month, charged the students on the need to speak out against any form of sexual and gender-based violence.

While also emphasising the theme, ‘#Silenceisnotanoption’, the department expressed its commitment to creating a safe and supportive environment for all students to share their experiences, speak out and seek help when the need arises.

“Through a series of events, new innovations, and campaigns, we will educate students on the devastating effects of sexual harassment and domestic violence, and empower them to become advocates for change.

“By speaking out and seeking help, we can break this cycle and create a culture of respect and empathy. We are proud to join other members of the university community and indeed the Lagos State Government, in this critical campaign against #SGBV”, said Dr Adesemoye.

A senior lecturer in the department, Mr Adewale Ajayi, also charged the students to support the department in the fight against all forms of harassment, particularly domestic violence.

“We believe that silence only perpetuates the cycle of violence, and domestic violence cuts across all the gender. Therefore, it is important you speak out against the menace”, he charged.

According to the officials, the Department of Mass Communication, LASUSTECH, is committed to developing and nurturing outstanding professionals through innovative teaching, training, cutting-edge research and infusing ethical standards in media and communication studies.
