The Ikorodu West Local Council Development Area (LCDA) has warned residents on the need for early treatment of cholera to save lives and good hygienic conditions.

The Council Chairman, Hon. Sulaimon Kazeem Olanrewaju (SKO), on Wednesday, also listed Primary Health Centres (PHCs) across the LCDA that residents should report for treatment if symptoms of malaria are noticed.

“Cholera is a sudden illness that happens when a person swallows food or water containing Vibrio cholerae bacteria.

“Cholera can cause severe diarrhea, dehydration and even death.

“Clean water and good hygiene are important to prevent it.

“Cholera comes from the V. cholerae bacteria. People infected with these bacteria can spread disease through their feaces (also called stool or poop). They do so when infected feaces get into the water system. If the water isn’t properly sanitized (cleaned), people using the water to drink, cook and wash risk exposure”, the Chairman said.

While stating the importance of hand washing, the statement also listed signs of the deadly disease and four health centres and that of the General Hospital, lkorodu, that residents must report if such is detected.

“So, it’s important to wash your hands to prevent infection”, he said.

“The following are the symptoms: diarrhea, or extremely watery poop; intense thirst; lower amounts of urine (pee); muscle cramps; restlessness or irritability; vomiting and weakness.

“If you develop any cholera symptoms, immediately contact a nearby healthcare provider in Ikorodu West LCDA: IPAKODO PRIMARY HEALTH CENTRE; MAJIDUN PRIMARY HEALTH CENTRE; ORI OKUTA PRIMARY HEALTH CENTRE; IGBO OLOMU PRIMARY HEALTH CENTRE and GENERAL HOSPITAL, lkorodu.

“Early treatment can save your life”, the Chairman warned.
