Former students of the Yewa Gramma School, Ikorodu, under the aegis of Class of 2001, have deplored the decaying state of infrastructures and security in the school, and called for timely intervention.

They called on the representative of the Ikorodu Federal Constituency, Rep. Babajimi Benson, other elected representatives and stakeholders to, as a matter of urgency, come to the aid of the school by providing buildings, rehabilitate the existing ones and ensure that there is effective security in the school.

Yewa Grammar School, which is the only secondary school in the whole of Aga and Ijomu area of Ikorodu Local Government and also serving several other areas in Igbogbo/Bayeku Local Council Development Area and Ikorodu West Local Council Development Area, runs Junior Secondary School 1 to 3 and Senior Secondary School 1 to 3.

Mr Idris Olawale Moshood, President of the set, made the appeal on behalf of his set during the presentation of free forms of the National Examination Council (NECO), as support for four students of the school.

The beneficiaries are: Kuti Fathia (Commercial Class), Adeyemo Karamot (Science Class), Safiu Usman (Science Class) and Joseph Racheal (Art class).

“Ever since we came together as a class set, our intention has been to give back to our alma mater; the school that gave us good beginning and where we all graduated from and that is all that we have been doing and we intend to continue to do”, he said.

“And it has been about six years now that we have started coming together as a set. Since then, we have been coming to this school every year to check, render assistance to the students and school at large.

“Part of the projects that we have been embarking on are the repair of the roofs, flooring of classrooms and we rehabilitated about three to four classrooms’ floor. We also donated chairs to the school for the use of the students. Also, we donated exercise books to the junior school among others”, Mr Moshood said.

Expressing his disappointment at the state of the school, the President of the set said that structures within the school needs serious attention, while there is also need for new buildings. He also called for improvement in the area of security within the school.

Furthermore, he appealed to Rep. Babajimi Benson, Chairman, Ikorodu Local Government and other stakeholders, for assistance.

“There are still a lot that need to be done in this school, from the security challenges to buildings. If you look at this Yewa Grammar School, there is still a lot of things that needed to be done. Presently, we are looking at a storey building which we left in the school when we graduated.

“That same building is still here and needing serious attention. In the junior school, what we have there before now are the Jakande blocks which have been demolished and they are only left with inadequate classes.

“We are appealing to the people in power; the honourables in Ikorodu and other stakeholders, the Chairman of Ikorodu Local Government, Hon. Babajimi Benson representatives of Ikorodu Federal Constituency and other Honourables in Ikorodu.

“We are appealing to them to come and assist us in this school. There is a lot of things that need to be done; classrooms and a lot of amenities and the facilities are needed by the staff and students in this school”, he appealed.

He congratulated the recipients of the set’s scholarship, while also pledging to do more for the school.

Mrs Aboloye Oluwafemi Abiodun, Vice Principal, Yewa Grammar School, Ikorodu, speaking, appreciated the former students of the school for encouraging students of the school and motivating them to be productive.

“I want to really appreciate this class set. This is a way of encouraging and motivating our students. Seeing students like them that passed out seven years ago who are now very successful and now deemed it fit to give back to the school, it’s a lot of encouragement. They have been making our works in impacting moral and academy on the students easier. What they have done shows that they can be successful as well”, she said.

“As teachers, our efforts and prayers always are that our students should be great in life. That is our desire and happiness in life. We are very always happy and joyful seeing our students excel. We are always very proud of them.

“My advice to the current students is for them to appreciate this good gestures of the former students by facing their academic. They should listen to the instructions given to them by the teachers”, she said.

One of the beneficiaries, Joseph Racheal, who said that she was privileged to be a beneficiary of the old students’ gesture, said that the NECO form is relief for her because her parents have been struggling to give her and her sibling education.

“I am privilege to be part of the students that this award is being offered to. I am happy because, it has been struggle for my parents to pay for two students. My sister and l are both in SSS 3. So, to pay for my NECO examination is a relief for my parents, and I appreciate the organisers of this programme a lot”, she said.

“My advice to other students is to be more diligent and committed to their education so that they can also benefit from other scholarship awards”.

“To the 2001 set, I say a big thank you to you for reaching out to us here in Yewa Senior Grammar School”, she added.
