Ikorodu Division has grappled with a sense of neglect from the state government, LG and LCDAs, marked by sluggish project execution and an apparent lack of attention to critical infrastructure. This neglect has left the division facing numerous challenges, from inadequate road networks to insufficient social amenities. The slow pace of project execution has been a recurring issue, with many projects either delayed indefinitely or completed far behind schedule. This delay has not only hindered the division’s development but has also eroded public trust in the party (APC) and government’s ability to address pressing needs effectively.
However, amidst these challenges, a beacon of hope emerged through the intervention of the Federal Government, facilitated by the diligent efforts of Honourable Babajimi Benson (Ikorodu Federal Constituency) and Senator Tokunbo Abiru (Lagos East Senatorial District). Their commitment to the development of Ikorodu Division has led to the initiation and execution of several Federal Government-sponsored infrastructural and social development projects.
As the 2025 Local Government Elections in Lagos State draw near, Ikorodu Division loom on the horizon, the focus shifts to the critical task of ensuring that credible candidates emerge to lead the Local Government (LG) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) within the division to consolidate the efforts of the federal lawmakers. Central to this objective is the need for political parties to present candidates who possess the requisite qualities of integrity, competence, and a genuine commitment to public service.
Ikorodu Division, situated in the bustling city of Lagos, is a hub of activity and a melting pot of diverse cultures and aspirations. The forthcoming elections present an opportunity to elect leaders who will champion the development and progress of the region, addressing the needs and concerns of its residents.
However, political parties, especially the ruling party (APC) play a pivotal role in shaping the electoral landscape by presenting candidates who reflect the values and aspirations of the electorate. It is therefore important that political parties, especially the ruling APC, prioritize the selection of candidates through internal democracy, all eligible aspirants should be given equal opportunities to compete, based on merit, without undue influence or bias, primordial affiliations or monetary inducements. This approach not only strengthens the party but also enhances public trust and confidence in the democratic process.
Moreover, as the election season process unfolds in less than 12 months, it is crucial to uphold the principles of civility, respect, and peaceful coexistence. The campaign period should be characterized by healthy debates, constructive dialogue, and the exchange of ideas aimed at enlightening the electorate and fostering informed decision-making.
Importantly, stakeholders must unite in condemning any form of campaign of calumny, hooliganism, or violence. Such negative tactics not only undermine the democratic process. Instead, candidates should focus on articulating their vision and plans for governance, engaging in issue-based discourse, and seeking to earn the trust and support of the electorate through merit and integrity.
Furthermore, it is essential to caution against the temptation to resort to power grabs or rebellions in the pursuit of political interests. Democracy thrives on adherence to due process, respect for institutions, and the rule of law. Any attempt to subvert these principles undermines the democratic fabric of society and jeopardizes the stability and progress of the division.
As the 2025 Local Government Elections in Ikorodu Division approach, i want to seize this opportunity to appeal to all stakeholders to commit to democratic ideals, responsible governance, and collective progress. By electing capable and ethical leaders, rejecting divisive tactics, and embracing a culture of tolerance and respect.
