It was a low key celebration for this year’s International Teachers’ Day in Ikorodu, as hundreds of teachers gathered to observe the day.
Since 1994, the World Teacher’s Day (WTD) has been celebrated every October 5th of every, as declared by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Organization (UNESCO), and NUT lkorodu Branch has always observe the day.
This year’s celebration is themed, “The teachers we need for the education we want: The global imperative to reserve the teacher shortage”.
Chairman, Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Oluwafemi Fakolade, speaking at the year’s celebration, which was held at the Methodist Primary School/Oga Primary School/Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) premises, on Thursday, said that this year’s celebration was aimed at addressing challenges facing teachers and how to design effective ways of solving such.
“The year’s event will address the challenges faced by teachers in emergency contexts, and spotlight innovative methods to attract, retain, and motivate educators”, he said.
“It will also explore and present examples of how education systems, societies, communities, and families can acknowledge, value and actively support teachers”.
Fakolade stated that the union has maintained good relationship with stakeholders in Ikorodu, which has assisted in its success.
He assured teachers that his administration will continue to deliver on its promises to positively impact on them.
“The union has maintained a progressive relationship with all stakeholders over the years, and it has helped in the execution of the agenda and various programs of the union”, he said.
“We shall continue to deliver quality representation of governance to the light of the world (teachers of lkorodu).
“Thank you all for gracing the occasion”.
The Ayangbure of Ikorodu, His Royal Majesty, Oba Kabir Shotobi, congratulated the teachers on the celebration, and for developing students, physically and mentally.
The royal father, who said that the teaching profession is a noble one with Jesus Christ and Prophet Muhammade (S.A.W) also being teachers, was represented by the Baale of Ojogbe, Chief Olukayode Olomo.
At the event were Rep. Babajimi Benson, representative, Ikorodu Federal Constituency who was represented by Mr Rasheed Aregbesola, his Constituency Manager, Mrs Anike Adekanye, Tutor – General.Permanent Secretary, Education District II represented by Mr Olaniyonu Adegboyegba, Principal, Ipakodo Senior Secondary School and Mrs Bisi Mustapha Bello, a retired Head Teacher represented the former Majority Leader, Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Sanai Agunbiade among others.
