The Senator representing the Lagos East Senatorial District, Sen. Tokunbo Abiru, FCA, has, once again, pleaded with residents of Ikorodu and other users of the Ikorodu – Itoikin road to bear with the new administration, while also assuring that rehabilitation of the road will commence any moment from now.
Abiru said that he has been in talk with the new Minister of Works over the execution of the approval given by the last administration for the rehabilitation of the road.
The Senator, who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions, gave the assurance at his Senatorial Constituency Office in Ikorodu, on Saturday.
The situation on the road has been terrible over the years with users of the road going through hell. The total collapse of the road has badly affected economic and social lives of the people along the corridor and those plying it.
Many vehicles had packed up due to the terrible state of the road with residents paying high fare to commute, while there has been several accidents as well. These have led to outcry and appeal to the federal and state governments for quick intervention.
“I know that we all know the pains along that corridor, not only just now, but in the past. For those who understand that road, that is the road that was constructed by Gen. Yakubu Gowon way back in 1975, and given the population of people living around that place today, it almost unbearable and unmottorable”, Sen. Abiru said.
“This, we have seen since 2021 to be precise, and the engagement that started way back under the former administration and with the support of the last administration, we have been able to get an approval even before the end of that administration for a complete rehabilitation of that road”, he recalled.
“So, the assurance that I will just given out today is that, yes, we have a new administration and as a matter of fact, if you will recall, the new Minister of Works, His Excellence, Honourable Minister Umahi, in one of the very first visits that he made after his swearing-in, was to the Southwest and Ikorodu – Itokin is one of the major places that he visited.
“That is also borne out of the conversation we have had with him, and he assured us that in the shortest possible time, all of the plans that have been put in place, will be implemented”, he said.
Sen. Abiru pleaded with residents of Ikorodu, Lagos East and entire Nigerians making use of the road to exercise more patient while assuring that the rehabilitation work will commence soon.
“So, the comfort and the assurance that I want to give is that, our people should just be patient. We know that it is a corridor that is very important to us and to the Southwest as well, and the assurance is that, it will be done and the rehabilitation will start any time from now”, he pleaded.
