Residents of the Ikorodu Division of Lagos State, Southwest, Nigeria, have said that Ikorodu has no reason to experience flooding which has been a major challenge in many parts of the Division, while they attributed the cause to negligence on the part of the State and the Local Council Areas.

They are of the view that the geographical location of the Division placed it above the water, while attributing the challenges to lack of proper drainage system and good road network.

Concerned residents made their position known while responding to a story in which the Lagos State Government warned residents of Ikorodu and other parts of the state, that they should expect flood anytime soon.

Kunle Matti, the General Secretary, Ijede Development Foundation (IDF) and community developer reacting, said:

“The topography and general nature of Ikorodu cannot put it on a major flood risk”, he said.

“I believe it is lack of responsibility on the side of government at different levels, especially the state government by not constructing and rehabilitating roads, drainage systems. This is responsible for the artificial flood threats in Ikorodu division.

“The only panacea to ameliorate flood challenge in Ikorodu, is for the government to construct roads, create new road networks and construct primary, secondary and tertiary drainage channels accordingly.

“The suffering is becoming unbearable for the residents. God bless our land”, he lamented.

Another resident, Mr Adeyemi, simply stated:

“Ikorodu has nothing to do with flood. It is basically the creation and negligence of the government”.
