Youths in Igbogbo have expressed their worry over the state of many primary and secondary schools in Igbogbo/Bayeku Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Ikorodu Division, Lagos State.
President of the youth body, Comrade Kazeem Ogunmuyiwa, appealed to the state government for quick attention by investing in education and providing modern structures and facilities required for sound education.
The concerned residents, who are members of the Igbogbo Youth Coalition (IYC), spoke at a press conference held last weekend at the Adeboruwa palace, lgbogbo, to express their displeasure over the state of roads and other infrastructures in the council held at the Adeboruwa palace, Igbogbo at the weekend.
“The fossil reaction to primary education is very worrisome. Many primary schools in Igbogbo and her environs are in state of comatose; Local Government Primary School, Oreta, Igbogbo, Elepe Primary School, Ewu-Elepe, Igbogbo, Salvation Army Primary School, Agunfoye, Igbogbo, Ansar Ud Deen Primary School, Igbogbo, Local Government Primary School, Igbe, Igbogbo, Lajo Community Primary School, Lajo, Igbogbo, Anglican Primary School, Ofin, Igbogbo, UAMC, Eleja Primary School, Igbogbo, Methodist Primary School, Igbogbo, Local Government Primary School, Bayeku, Igbogbo, and their buildings are eyesore. Some are with tattered roof coverings, bad ceilings and toilet facilities. Investment in education at the primary level becomes very pivotal in this global scope of learning”, he said.
“Government should erect modern school structures for primary schools in Igbogbo, and equip them with appropriate facilities, and also train a good number of teachers to meet the UNICEF learners-to- teacher ratio standard. However, we acknowledge government’s efforts in primary education with the introduction of the EKOEXCEL system. The system would be inefficient and ineffective if these challenges are not properly addressed by the government”, they appealed.
Ogunmuyiwa specially mentioned the Lagos State Girls Model College in Agunfoye, where he mentioned that the lack of facilities in the school prevented students from writing their WAEC, and other schools in Ikorodu.
“Moreover, Lagos State Girls High School, Agunfoye, Igbogbo, is bleeding due to unavailability of essential facilities for secondary education. Facilities not provided are: standard laboratories for academic purposes, playing ground. The school girls couldn’t write this year’s science practical exams because of the age-long fossil approach to education by the relevant authority”, he said.
Igbogbo youths also called on the Lagos State Government to ensure that the only community library acquired by the Office of the Special Adviser on Education, for upgrading to an e – library, is completed and open for use.
“It is highly deserving of this glorious kingdom to have an e-library to provide the entire LCDA access to the updated information for academic and research purposes. The kingdom is blessed with the most versatile, vibrant, reliable, and very resourceful community based students’ group (Igbogbo Students’ Union) that has been making strenuous efforts to put the community library (Igbogbo Reading Room) into proper shape – only a wicked one will appraise anyone on the present level of the only library that has been serving multiple communities for over 7 decades”, Ogunmuyiwa said.
“This should be another call for emergency attention, just like what was displayed during COVID-19 or even more! We have the updated information that the acclaimed renovated library has been locked against its natural purposes”.
