Residents and motorists alike have queried the rationale behind the removal of the concrete barriers placed in the middle of the Port Authority/TOS Benson Avenue, which were believed were placed there to prevent traffic.
The placement of the concrete pavement which started some weeks ago from the Ikorodu Ferry Terminal in lpakodo, has extended to the General Hospital, Ikorodu.
THE IMPACT gathered that the Lagos State Government,is embarking on the project started removing the concrete stones from the Ferry Terminal to the Police Post Roundabout in Ipakodo, a situation residents and motorists said was not thought out properly.
They alleged that the road has recorded many accidents since the removal of the barriers which they said caused big holes in the middle of the road which is not motorable before now, especially from the ferry terminal axis.
Mr Femi Odulaja, a business man and socialite, speaking with our reporter, asked about what informed the construction of the concrete barriers in the first place and reason for its removal.
“Are you aware that they have started removing the concrete barriers that were placed to demarcate the road starting from the ferry terminal?”, Mr Odulaja asked.
“What actually informed the construction in the first place without rehabilitating the road which has increased traffic”, he further asked.
“I am asking because you are a journalist and should be informed and if not, assist us in asking the government and feed us back”.
Salau Kayode, a resident of Ipakodo who also spoke with our reporter, said that the demarcation was unnecessary because the road was not wide enough.
He also added that there have been accidents on the road.
“The removal started five days ago from the Dangote side up to the Police Post. They left the rest. The action has caused lots of accidents in that area and worsen the roads day – by – day. People are really complaining”, he said
“The road is tiny for such demarcation. Now, big trucks cannot turn conveniently anymore unlike before with containers falling off every day at that police post.
Another resident who said that he plies the road every morning and evening to and from his office, stated that the government should have rehabilitated the road before the demarcation to make it motorrable.
“It has been hell since the demarcation was introduced because the road has collapsed before and the government did not make effort to rehabilitate it”, he said.
“They actually meant well going by how our people drive and block the other lane meant for vehicles going the other direction whenever there is traffic. But the best thing they should have done is to first rehabilitate the road and if possible, expand it from the Ferry terminal to the Police Post.
“We are really experiencing hell right now, and the removal of the barriers has made the road more dangerous”, he added.
Meanwhile, a very reliable source has told THE IMPACT that the concrete barriers were removed when the government came to the realization that there is need to rehabilitate the deplorable section before the demarcation is fixed.
