As part of activities commemorating the 2022 Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Month, Lagos State Education District II held an advocacy programme for students to enlighten them on domestic and sexual violence and educate them on the efforts of the State Government to eradicate the menace.
Speaking at the event, Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary of the District, Mrs. Anike Adekanye condemned the high rate of rape and sexual violence prevalent in the society, insisting that the perpetrators of the dastardly acts must be arrested and brought to book.
She stated that the awareness programme was designed to raise students’ consciousness, considering their susceptibility to incidents of rape and other forms of abuse.
“Lagos State is very competent in handling these issues but there is a cultural and entitlement mentality that we must end as we all join hands to stop rape and all forms of domestic violence”, she said.
While appreciating Mr. Governor for committing resources towards securing the lives and dignity of students in all public schools across the State, she equally commended the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo for always fighting the cause of the students and working hard to uplift the education sector.
The TG/PS, directed all Social Workers, Guidance Counsellors and Security Officials in schools under District II to be extra vigilant and alert to all forms of abuse among the students.
She also enjoined all relevant stakeholders to play their parts in their various homes, schools, religious institutions and offices toward ensuring that Lagos is free from all social vices, especially rape and domestic violence.
