Students in Igbogbo, under the aegis of the Igbogbo Students’ Union (ISU), have parleyed with the Lagos State Government in addressing the deficit in educational facilities in the community.
In a statement signed by Comr. Ewulogbo Temilade and Comr. Ogunlana Romoke, ISU President and General Secretary respectively, on Thursday, August 18, 2022, the students said that they met with top government officials in the Office of the Permanent, Ministry of Education.
The ISU President, Comr. Ewulogbo Temiloluwa, who spoke briefly about the Union, also solicited for intervention in the provision of the required amenities and facilities needed by the secondary schools in Igbogbo.
He said that their requests are based on the research conducted by the Union executives.
Ewulogbo also added that there are some buildings in Oreyo Grammar School that are already completed but are yet to be put to use due to delay in commissioning.
Comr. Kuti Damilare, President, National Association of Ikorodu Division Students (NAIDS) and former ISU President, who was also part of the delegation, reiterated the efforts of the Union in making provisions to address infrastructural deficits in schools.
“The Union has been making effort from our own end, like providing chairs for primary schools, provision of books etc. However, we have decided to inform the government about the situation because the Union can’t do it alone and this has led us to request for assistance from the government”, he said.
Damilare pleaded with the government to ensure that necessary facilities are provided in schools to make learning interesting and conducive for students.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr Abolaji Abolanle Abayomi, while welcoming the Union delegation, commended their efforts in focusing on the students of the community.
He said that education is a future project, whereby fruits planted will germinate in the future.
While stating that the government is aware of the challenges, Mr Abayomi also added that the government alone cannot provide all that are required in schools which is why private interventions are welcomed to support.
He, however, promised that the state government will continue to intervene where and when necessary.
Responding to the usage of facilities completed in Oreyo, Mr Abayomi said that the school building in Oreyo Grammar School and the Lagos State Girls’ Model at Agunfoye, will soon be commissioned and release for use.
He also said that government will look into the abandoned building in Keme Balogun Grammar School and also that the Office of Drainage Service will work on the drainage problem in Zumuratul Islamiyyah School, Igbogbo, as complained by the Union.
The Permanent Secretary also assured the students that the Office of the Special Adviser on Education (OSAE) to the Governor, would look into the requests for libraries.
Also speaking, the Director of Laboratory Office, Mrs Akinfoyewa, who was invited concerning the provision of laboratories for the school, also commended the bold step taken by the Union and promised to take necessary steps needed.
