Continental and national feats recorded by athletes from Ikorodu Local Government, Lagos State, Southwest, Nigeria, in the last one week has not gone unnoticed as Rep. Babajimi Benson, showered them with commendations.
Rep. Benson is the representative of the Ikorodu Federal Constituency which is also a local government and a division.
The Ikorodu – born Super Falcon and Barcelona striker, Asisat Oshoala, had last Thursday, emerged as the CAF Women’s Player of the Year for the fifth term.
She set the record of being the first female player to win the much coveted honour for five times.
Another Ikorodu – born and young National Champion who won Table Tennis Cadet and Mini – Cadet categories at the 14th Aso Table Tennis Club Annual Championships (ATTC), in Abuja in 2021, Master Mathew Kuti, at the weekend, was part of the country’s U -15 team that lost in the final to Egypt at the 2022 ITTF Africa Youth Championships.
In a statement personally signed by the lawmaker, Rep. Babajimi Benson, who is the Chairman, House Committee on Defense, said that the athletes has placed Ikorodu on global sporting map.
“I join the world in celebrating the amazing feats of young lads from Ikorodu Federal Constituency, who made us proud at the global level”, the lawmaker said.
“I congratulate the duo of Azeezat Oshoala, who won the CAF awards of the 2022 African best player, Mati Taiwo who emerged first (U -19 boys) and the entire #TeamNigeria that got the Silver Medal at 2022 International Table Tennis Federation Africa Youth Championships in Tunisia (U-15 boys category).
“I thank the coaches who have also sacrificed their time and energy to guide these minds on the global pedestal, may our labour never be in vain.
“Congratulations once again and keep making Ikorodu proud”, he said.
