Rep. Benson’s Bill On Discrimination Against Persons With Disabilities Passes Second Reading

The House of Representatives has passed for the second time, Bill seeking to amend the Discrimination against Persons with Disability (Prohibition) Act, 2018 for upward review of retirement age of persons with disability.

Hon. Babajimi Benson (APC, Lagos) sponsored the amendment legislation titled, “Discrimination Against Persons with Disability Prohibition (Amendment) Bill, 2022”.

The representative of the Ikorodu Federal Constituency who is the Chairman, House Committee on Defense, announcing the development on his social media handles Thursday night, said:

“The bill I sponsored for the upward review of age and years of service for people living with disability was read for the second time and passed”, he said.

“The proposed upward review from 35 to 40 years of service and 65 to 70 years for retirement is in line with global best practices.

“When passed, the bill will not only serves as impetus but recognize the commitment and contributions of people living with disability to socio-economic development of Nigeria.

Hon. Benson, speaking on the floor, proposed 70 years as retirement age from 65 years for teachers and 40 years of service from 35 years.

He added that the same law is an international best practices which is applicable in South Africa and the United Kingdom.

The Speaker, House of Representatives, Rt Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, announcing the Bill, said that the Bill is for the upward review of the retirement age of the persons with disability standing in the name of Hon. Babajimi Benson.

You will remember that the Bill was first read on Tuesday, 1st February, 2022, I invite Hon. Benson to move the Bill for the second time.

Hon. Abubakar Bichi (Kano State) seconded the Bill.
