The Academic Staff Union of the newly established Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Ikorodu, has congratulated Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education Mr Tokunbo Philip Wahab, for the smooth transmutation of the former Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) into a degree awarding university of science and technology.
The new University received the nod of the National Universities Commission (NUC) to begin operation earlier this week after the governor signed a bill establishing the University of Science and Technology last week.
In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Comrade Inasa-Thomas, on behalf of the Chairman, Comrade Akinrinlola Ibitoye, the union applauded the Governor for his visionary and transformational leadership style that influenced the birth of the new University which is in tune with global reality.
“This laudable act represents a pragmatic attempt to further deliver on the THEMES agenda of Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration”, Comrade Akinrinlola posited.
“We believe that it is an indication of your passion for excellence in the delivery of tertiary education in Lagos State.
“It is also a significant step towards ensuring that Lagos State, through the university, would now produce a crop of high quality human resources who have been prepared and equipped for the 21st century digital economy”, the statement added.
Comrade Akinrinlola also commended the pivotal role played by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education Mr Tokunbo Wahab stating:
“Your relentless efforts in the pursuit of qualitative tertiary education for the indigenes and residents Lagos State demonstrated towards making LASUSTECH become a reality. Your unique input in the entire process has indeed met the expectations of many Lagosians who earnestly yearned for quality science and technology based education which is the trend worldwide”, he said.
The union equally thanked the governor who is also the Visitor to the University, for appointing the former Rector of the erstwhile polytechnic, Dr Nurudeen Oluremi Olaleye, as the Acting Vice Chancellor as well as the reinstatement of the sacked ‘NASU 4’.
ASUP described the decision as a bold step.
“It is a bold and wise decision that would engender seamless take-off of the new university”, the statement also stated.
“We viewed this decision as thoughtful and a positive development that will provide the much needed peaceful atmosphere and industrial harmony for the effective running of a new academic institution like LASUSTECH”.
The union further pledged its unalloyed support for Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration towards ensuring that the newly minted university becomes a first class citadel of learning through rigorous, ground breaking academic research and innovative technological inventions.
