In the true spirit of Valentine’s Day, D’Bard Creative Media is set to stage an adaptation of Shakespeare’s popular play, ‘Romeo and Juliet’, in commemoration of 2022 Valentine Day described globally as the lovers’ day.
The group will be staging the play in conjunction with the D’Theatrepreneurs of the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Skills Acquisition (CESA), Lagos State Polytechnic, at the 700 – Seater Auditorium of the Ikorodu Main Campus of the institution on February 14, 2022.
In a statement, the Lead Creative of D’Bard Creative, Mr Waliu Adeyeri, said that the play will be staged to further the campaign against drug abuse and cultism among youths and also preach love.
He said that the crew of the CESA, Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu main campus, would be enacting the play.
While giving insights on the play, Waliu, who adapted the play, said that it is a contemporary adaptation of the classic Romeo and Juliet story by William Shakespeare which captures present day happenings in our society, especially in the higher institution which served as the locale of the play.
“The play captures the story of two lovers from different cult groups who got entangled in a love web, Juliana’s (Juliet) brother is the second-in-command in the Mamba Cult, while Roland belongs to the Canine group. Their relationship grows rapidly until circumstances rise against them,” the statement said.
“Having thought of how best we could use what we have to contribute to the growth and development of our immediate community, this project comes to mind, staging an entertaining drama that would aid the propagation of the campaign against some social ills that have taken over our generation.
“At DBard Creative Media, we have chosen to stage the play on Valentine’s Day to suit the theme of the play and because we believe that with genuine love for oneself, our youths won’t take drugs that would harm their mental health, and with genuine love for our fellow humans, we will shun all forms of social vices”.
The statement assured that the crew for the play will thrill their audience with their performance on the day.
“Our crew and actors are getting ready to thrill everyone and touch lives as we aim to rekindle the dwindling ember of love in our society,” the statement said.
