Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu signing the Anti-Open grazing bill into law at the EXCO Chamber, Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja, on Monday, September 20, 2021. With him is the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN).

Lagos State governor, Babjide Sanwo-Olu on Monday signed the bill prohibiting open cattle grazing and trespass of cattle on land in Lagos State into law.

Sanwo – Olu announced the signing on his Facebook page this afternoon, stating that it is now criminal in the state for cattle rearers to occupy unapproved public areas and private lands with their livestock.

Lagos State House of Assembly passed the bill during plenary on September 9 with the speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, directing the clerk to send copies to the governor for assent.

“Today, I signed the Law to prohibit open cattle grazing and the trespass of cattle on land in Lagos state” Gov. Sanwo – Olu said.

“Eleven days after its passage by the State House of Assembly, I passed a bill prohibiting Open Cattle Grazing and Trespass of Cattle on Land in Lagos State.

“With this new law, it is now criminal in Lagos for cattle rearers to occupy unapproved public areas and private land with their livestock for grazing. The law also prohibits the act of moving cattle round public places by herders” the Gov. declared.

“I have directed the security agencies to start immediate enforcement of the provisions of the law” he added.

The signing of the anti-open grazing law by the Governor followed the decision of the Southern Governors’ Forum in August, setting the September deadline to pass the law across member States.

With passage, Lagos will be joining Oyo, Ekiti, Ondo  and Osun among other Southern States where the anti-open grazing bill into law is in place.
