A Chieftain of the Governance Advisory Council and the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Olorunfunmi Basorun, has charged the representative of the Ikorodu Constituency II in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Nurudeen Solaja, to ensure that no part of Ikorodu Division is reduced and also should not allow other parts of other divisions to be merged with the division.
Basorun also charged the two – term legislator to ensure that the establishment of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology is passed into law as well as the implementation of the proposed reduction in the pensions for former governors and their deputies.
Basorun, one of the few living Awoists, stated this during the Ikorodu Constituency II 7th Annual Constituency Stakeholders’ Meeting held at the Prestige Event, along Ibeshe Road, Ikorodu, on Thursday, August 19, 2021.
“Hon. Solaja has been in the minds of many of us because he has been using his representation to bring development to the Ikorodu Constituency II”, Asiwaju Basorun said.
“The experience he has garnered will be of great importance to Ikorodu Constituency II and Ikorodu Division in general.
“But make sure that you (Hon. Solaja) support the passage of the bill that recommended the reduction in entitlement for former Governors and former Deputy Governors. It is important to do that to ensure reduction in government spending”, Asiwaju Basorun said.
The Lagos State House of Assembly had last Thursday approved the report of its committee on Establishment which recommended the reduction of pensions for former governors and other affected officials by 50 percent.
While reacting to the recent controversy generated by an attempt to merge Kosofe and Shomolu with Ikorodu, Asiwaju Basorun also charged the Ikorodu Constituency representative not to support any merging of Ikorodu Division with another part of the state.
“You must also ensure that the Ikorodu Division is not reduced in any form or merged with other parts”, Basorun urged the lawmaker.
The elder statesman also charged Hon. Solaja to ensure that the bill on the establishment of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology is passed into law.
“Another bill that you must ensure that it is passed into law is the bill on transforming the Lagos State Polytechnic into a University”, he said.
Also speaking on passing an amended version of the Criminal Justice Law of the state which bars the police from parading suspects before the media, Basorun charged Lagos Assembly to review its stand and allow for the continuous parade of suspects to deter others from committing crime.
“Let us continue to parade criminals, they are not going to be referred to as criminals once the court absolves them of the charge.
“Parading them has done a lot in reducing crime by discouraging others getting into crime because they know that they will be paraded.
The GAC Chieftain also took out time to charge Council Chairmen in Ikorodu division to emulate the legislators in having programmes to be implemented for the benefits of the people.
“Our Council Chairmen should emulate the Lagos State House of Assembly which has done well in giving us their report by developing programmes for implementation in the next four years”, he charged.
