Ikorodu West Local Council Development Area branch of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has concluded the one month sponsored behavioral change campaign against gender based violence and harmful practices such as rape, cultism, drug abuse and teenage pregnancy.
The Youth group, about a month ago, received a grant from the Society for Family Health (SFH) as a partner in the implementation of the UNESCO’s Spotlight Initiative 2.
The campaign also touched areas of Sexual Reproductive Health, Sexually Transmittable Disease and Sexually Transmitted Infections with more emphasis on HIV/AIDS.
According to a statement released at the end of the programme by the Coordinator, NYCN, Ikorodu West branch, Comrade Asoro Abubakri Olatunji, the final report was submitted on August 12, 2021, with commendations by the SFH.
In the course of the implementation of the mandate, the team visited six communities in Ikorodu West LCDA – Igbo – Olomu, Oke-Oko, Owutu, Okeriya abd and Asolo Oluwakemi.
The team also visited six schools in the council to interact with students. The schools visited were- Isawo Comprehensive College, Hidden Treasure School, Soulfield Secondary School, FECOND Academy, ZAMFAT School Asolo and LATLAM College, Oke-Oriya.
At Igbo – Olomu Community, the organisation adopted aerobic exercise to get the attention of the youths, while in some other places, drama was adopted as a means of reaching out.
Six peer sessions were conducted in all while a total of 170 peers were reached.
Comrade Asoro and Director of Empowerment, Comrade Jide Fashola, who were trained earlier for the programme, in turn did a step down training for five members of the youth body.
Each of the trained NYCN members in turn organised a peer session in schools and communities, while the Coordinator served as supervisor.
Comrade Asoro, in the release, commended members of his team for their commitment to community service.
He also appreciated all the host communities for embracing members of his team in the implementation of the project, while also commending the leadership of the Ikorodu West LCDA for creating an enabling environment for the youth council to contribute its quota towards the development of the LCDA.
Appreciation was also extended to SFH on behalf of the NYCN Ikorodu West LCDA, for the opportunity to be part of the UNESCO mandate.
He assured that the branch will continue to impact and deliver on its mandate to the youths in the community.
Others that served as Peer Educators on the project included Comr. Anthony Afolayan, Comr. Anuoluwapo Taiwo, Comr. Jide Fashola, Comr. Ilesanmi Abdullahi, Comr. Damilola Okuselu and Comr. Adeyemo who doubled as the official camera man of the team.
