-Plans to stage tournament in five divisions
With the National Youth Games slated for October, the Lagos State Scrabble and Monopoly Association is not leaving anything unturned in getting quality grassroots scrabble players to represent the state at the tournament.
The association held an U – 15 tournament at the Media Center of the Teslim Balogun Stadium on Thursday, 12th August, 2021, to select representatives for the state.
According to the association, similar tournaments will be organized in the five divisions to detect good scrabble players and encourage the playing of the game.
Joanna Eke, a 13 year-old female student of Chrisland High School, Idimu, Lagos, emerged winner of the Scrabble tournament.
In second position was David Idris, a 14 year-old boy while Ongbona Michael, a 14 year-old male student of Ikorodu Senior Grammar School, Oke Ota – Ona, Ikorodu, emerged in the third position.
Cash prizes were given to the participants in the first ten positions.
Speaking with Mr Ademola Ogunlewe, a member of the Lagos State Scrabble Association, he said that the tournament was staged to select state’s representatives for the national youth festival.
“With the forthcoming National Youth Games holding in Ilorin, Kwara State, in October, it becomes imperative to host competitions of this nature to select representatives of the State and overall talent hunt at the grassroots”, Ogunlewe said.
“The intention of the Association is to take this initiative to the five divisions of the state in order to generate an appropriate data base and ranking system of youth scrabble players all over the state”, he added.
On ground to monitor the tournament were the chairman of the association, Engr. Monsuru Akanbi, the state scrabble coach, Mr Akinyemisoye Ayomipo and Mr Ademola Ogunlewe.
