Sir (Engr.) Chief Olukayode Shoderu, KJW, a Chieftain of the Methodist Church of Nigeria and one of the strong promoters of the Lagoon State Movement, has said that the struggle for the creation of another state that will be called Lagoon State out of the existing Lagos will be realised some day.
The senior citizen, who is also a former Chairman of the Ikorodu Division Resource Development Group (IDRDG), said that people misunderstood the call by the Lagoon State Movement which late Chief Babatunde Olushola Benson, SAN, KJW, led, to carve out seven Local Governments out of the existing 20 in Lagos State to create another state.
Speaking with THE IMPACT on the death of Chief Benson, Engr. Shoderu said that the Lagoon State Movement, as led by Chief B.O.Benson, meant well for the residents.
He described the death of the revered legal icon as a great loss to humanity.
“It is a great loss. We have been together for a long time and he was one of the movers of the Lagoon State Movement which is for the creation of another state from the Lagos State but people misunderstood the agitation ", Engr. Shoderu said.
“If we get another state out of Lagos State, it means that we have two states from this area and we will be benefiting in a double way but people do not understand and mistook as an attempt to divide the state but it is not so”, he explained.
“He (late Benson) led the struggle and it is still on and I hope that we will reap its dividends some day.
Engr. Shoderu also described late Chief Benson as a great leader who mentored many and was always interested in development.
“Chief Benson was a great man when he was alive. He was a mentor, leader, a builder of men and resources. He is someone that everybody, especially the youths, should emulate and that is why we have been with him”, he said.
“He loved his people and we are grateful for his life”.
