The Ikorodu West Local Council Development Area (LCDA) branch of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), has been given a grant as part of the efforts to achieve the Society for Family’s (SFH’s) UNESCO spotlight initiative in the state.
The award was extended to the leading NYCN branch in the state by the Society For Family Health, to build the capacity of peer education to carry out campaigns and raise awareness on Comprehensive Sexuality Education/ Violence Against Women and Girls/Sexual Reproductive Heath Right/Harmful Practice (CSE/VAWG/SRHR/HP) through peer to peer education integrated communities.
According to the letter of award of the grant, the youth body is expected to embark on training, advocacy and sensitization on Sexual Reproductive Health and Right (SRHR) in their locality.
The programme, which commenced on June 14, 2021, is expected to end on July 23, 2021( six weeks duration).
The Ikorodu branch of the NYCN will train their members to be Family Life and Health Education (FLHE) peer education, using interpersonal communication or peer session to provide information to young people about Sexual Reproductive Health and Right (SRHR).
The youth group is also expected to:
“ To ensure the availability of Family Life and Health Education (FLHE) and Sexual Reproductive Health Right (SRHR) service for young people and by young people aged 6 – 25 in targeted communities.
“To sensitize in – school and out – of- school adolescent and youths aged 10 – 25 years on harmful practices (HP) VAWG SGBV in targeted communities, and
“To contribute to the documentary of UNESCO’s SI activities.
In specific term, NYCN, as a beneficiary of the grant, is expected to achieve the underlisted functions within the six weeks period:
“Conduct of advocacy visits to community and state level stakeholders.
“Training of at least 7 youths in the state to be FLHE peer education, using interpersonal communication and or peer session to provide information to young people about Sexual and Reproductive Health and Right ( SRHR).
“Sensitization of at least 90 in – school and out- of – school adolescents and youths aged 10- 25 years on harmful practice (HP), VAWG, SGBV in targeted communities.
“Referral and follow up of all GBV cases identified during PE session to ARFH/SFH designed site.
“Comprehensive documentation and reporting of all programme activities conducted.
Meanwhile, the Coordinator of NYCN in Ikorodu West LCDA, Comrade Asoro Abubakri Olatunji, speaking with THE IMPACT, said that the council chairman, Princess Jumoke Jimbo, has been visited and duly informed about the development.
He said that the Chairman commended them for the feat and developmental activities, while also charging them to put the grant into good use.
Asoro also said that representatives of the group have been part of the training at Knight Brigde Hotel, Ikeja, for the implementation of the project.
