-Council Chairmen should act on promises – NAIDS President
For about a year, the National Association of Ikorodu Division Students (NAIDS) has been at loggerhead with the six Council Chairmen in Ikorodu Division over the payment of bursary to students in their respective council areas.
But the Igbogbo/Bayeku Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Builder Sesan Daini, at a press briefing/interactive session with the media and stakeholders on Monday, April 12, 2021, said that he would pay bursary to all the students in higher institutions in the council within the next 30 days.
Daini, who said that his administration has given bursary awards in 2018 and 2019, assured the students of his commitment to pay this year’s bursary while responding to the question by Comrade Soyiga, the NAIDS President, lkorodu division, on the matter during the media parley.
“Since we assumed office in 2017, we gave bursary in 2018 and 2019 but we did not give in 2020 because of COVID – 19. I will give you (students) in 2021”, he assured the NAIDS President and other students present at the press conference.
“I want to assure you that the issue of bursary will be put to rest within the next 30 days. Bursary will be given to all our students within the next 30 days”, he emphasized.
While also giving his account of stewardship, Builder Daini stated what his administration has done so far in uplifting the educational sector of the council.
“We embarked on the total reconstruction of Block of seven (7) classrooms into an ultra-modern learning outfit in Lajo Primary School.
“We facilitated one block of 8-classrooms donated by Hon. Jimi Benson at Ibeshe Primary School.
“We also constructed perimeter fence for Baiyeku Primary School, Methodist Primary School, and LG Primary School, Igbe Laara”.
Other achievements in educational sector by tge council, according to the Chairman, are – Presentation of free G.C.E forms and JAMB forms to Igbogbo/Bayeku LCDA indigenes; Organisation of Spelling Bee Quiz competition at the council secretariat; Distribution of learning materials to Primary school pupils as part of the efforts at accentuating the SDG 4.
Builder Daini also said that his administration awarded scholarships to five(5) Students; two Secondary school students and three Tertiary institution students, and presentation of Deep Freezer to the Lagos State Girls’ Junior Model College, Agunfoye, Igbogbo.
Meanwhile, the NAIDS President, Ikorodu division, Comrade Soyiga, has described the assurance by Hon. Daini to pay the 2021 bursary as a welcome idea.
He, however, added that Council Chairmen in the division should match their promises with action by paying bursary awards to students in their domains.
“It’s a welcome idea for us and we appreciate it”, he said.
“All the chairmen had actually promised to pay our bursary but till this moment, they have refused to pick calls to discuss the issue with us. That shows how much they prioritize education.
“Sincerely, some of these chairmen are not doing enough and we wonder what is making it difficult for them to pay the bursary.
“Although, we wish and pray that they pay our bursary”, he added.
