-Plan summit to tackle divisional security situation
As a response to the security changes facing Ikorodu Division, Lagos State, Southwest, Nigeria, Coordinators of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) in the six Local Government (LG) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in Ikorodu division have charged Council Chairmen to adequately fund security and secure the lives of residents.
The Coordinators met at the Igbogbo/Bayeku LCDA Secretariat at an emergency meeting on Tuesday, 19th January, 2021, to discuss the state of security and other issues affecting youth development in the entire division.
The release sent to THE IMPACT was signed by Comrade Omotayo Odusanya, Chairman, NYCN Forum of Coordinators, Ikorodu Division & Coordinator of Igbogbo/Bayeku LCDA and Comrade Asoro Abubakri Olatunji, Secretary, NYCN Forum of Coordinators, Ikorodu Division & Coordinator of Ikorodu West LCDA.
According to the release, the security situation and how to provide support for the local security groups across the division were brought to the front burner.
“The meeting availed all the youth Coordinators the opportunity to share their views and opinions on the ways to provide necessary support for local security outfits in a bid to provide a lasting solution to the issues of cultism, violence, drugs, rape, among others and also work towards reviving the face of community policing in all the six LG/LCDAs in the division”, the statement stated.
It was resolved by the NYCN Coordinators that Council Chairmen should as a matter of urgency set up taskforce in their respective domains, empower various local security groups and call for the peace and security meeting.
It was also resolved that the NYCN in the division should also hold a security summit as a matter of urgency to address the security challenges, especially on the menace of cultism which has adversely affected the social and economic lives of the residents.
“All Local Council Chairmen in the division should as a matter of urgency set up Joint Task Force (JTF) in their various domains”, the statement said.
“All our Local Government Chairmen in Ikorodu Division should as a matter of urgency call for peace and security meeting consisting of stakeholders, including youth council Coordinators as youth representative.
“Local Government Chairmen in Ikorodu Division should empower and provide requisite funding for Police and local security outfits in their various domains”, the NYCN Coordinators charged.
They also resolved that the umbrella body for all youth groups should organize a summit on security in the division to discuss how to tackle security challenges.
“NYCN will host Ikorodu Division Security Summit as a matter of urgency to discuss issues relatIng to security and proffer measures towards achieving a lasting solution”, the release further stated.
Also at the meeting, the Coordinators commended Civil Society Organisations, Community Based Organisatios, especially Ikorodu Division Youth Movement, Ikorodu Ambassadors Group and others which have been persistently creating awareness on the social media against the cultism scourge.
They assured that the group will continue to discharge its constitutional duty as provided by the National Youth Policy and the Lagos State Youth Policy by championing the development of youths in Ikorodu division.
They also assured that:
“The Coordinators will continue to engage traditional rulers, political leaders and other stakeholders in the division in a bid to ensure that everyone is involved in the task of achieving a peaceful society”.
