Destiny Boys FC have emerged as the winner of the first edition of the Tokunbo Abiru Lagos East Soccer Gold Cup defeating Oladunjoye FC in the final match on Sunday (yesterday).
The impressive and keenly contested match between the two lkorodu- based teams, was played before a large crowd of spectators at the Police Barracks Playing Ground, along Igbogbo road, Ikorodu.
The Senatorial football competition, which was organised by the Directorate of Youth of the Tokunbo Abiru Campaign Team, was held in conjunction with the Ikorodu Divisional Football Association and the Epe Divisional Association.
Destiny Boys , who beat their opponents three nil (3-0) to emerge winners of the inaugural football tournament, carted away the N100, 000, 000 prize money and a gold trophy.
In the final of the female category of the competition played earlier, Victory Queens FC of Elepe beat their opponents by a lone goal (1-0).
The Director – General, Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), and Director of Youths, Tokunbo Abiru Campaign Team, Mr Toyin Gafaar Bolowotan, speaking at the final match, described Abiru as a lover of youths, adding that he has always encouraged the youths to improve and attain greater heights in their chosen careers.
He further said that the football challenge was organised to discover more football talents in the Senatorial district while encouraging the youths to live their dreams and aim for the top.
“Tokunbo Abiru doesn’t joke with anything that concerns the youths. Aside being a lover and supporter of football, which is one of the factors that gave birth to this competition, he also uses every opportunity he gets to motivate the younger ones on the need to be positive minded and hard working in their respective chosen endeavours,” Bolowotan said.
Meanwhile, the organisers of the competition disclosed that the Tokunbo Abiru Lagos East Soccer Gold Cup will continue as an annual event to encourage local talents.
Aside the champions, the runners-up were also awarded mouth-watering cash prizes and silver medals.
