An aide to the Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo – Olu, has directed Lagosians to disregard the information circulatingon social media that the State Government has signed an Executive Order for the return of the monthly Environmental Sanitation exercise.
The Special Assistant to the Governor on Social Media, Mr Juril Gawat, on his Twitter handle today said that the information is untrue and should be totally disregarded.
“The information about a so-called “Executive Order” on Environmental Sanitation exercise in Lagos State … This information is untrue and should be totally disregarded, pls”, he wrote.
The environmental sanitation exercise, used to be held every last Saturday of the month in the state, was nullified some years back by a Federal High court presided over by Justice Mohammed Idris.
In a suit filed by the human right lawyer, Barr. Ebun – Olu Adegboruwa (now a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN)), challenging the restriction of human and vehicular movements, the Judge ruled that there is no law in force in Lagos State by which any resident could be kept indoors compulsorily.
Justice Idris added that the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria grants freedom of movement to every citizen which cannot be taken away by any executive order.
