Lagos Food Kitchen Programme Kicks Off In Ikorodu

The Lagos Food Kitchen Programme today (yesterday) kicked off in Ikorodu with 1,250 residents benefitting in various motor garages and areas.

The food program was in fulfilment of the pledge made by the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, during a briefing that followed the Security Council meeting held at the State House in Marina, last Tuesday (April 14,2020) where be disclosed plan to embark on a programme, tagged: “Food Kitchen” aimed at feeding 100,000 youths daily.

On the first day of the programme, cooked food (white rice and jolly rice) were served in takeaway packs and distributed alongside water across several garages in Ikorodu.

Among the garages that benefitted on the first day of the programme were Ikorudu garage roundabout, Agric Bus Stop, Ogolonto garage, Gberigbe/Agura garage and Adamo garage.

A committee, led by Hon. Azeez Jimoh Olosugbo, worked with the leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Tricycle and Motorcycle Associations in Ikorodu to ensure that the food program is benefitted by the target beneficiaries, particularly the road transport employees who have been unable to work since the lockdown started.

Also benefited from the programme are youths from identified areas like Sabo, Orita Famous, Ipakodo, Igbogbo, Bayeku, Orita Maluti, Obun Ale, Ajina, Ita- Aro, Grammar School and Ojurowo among others.

The food intervention programme, which is another laudable initiative by Governor Sanwo-Olu aimed at mitigating the effect of the lockdown in the State, is expected to benefit 100, 000 youths daily in different areas across the state.

The leadership of the various transport unions in Ikorodu, at a meeting with the members of the monitoring committee of the food program, thanked the state government for the gesture and for remembering their members in the programmes aimed at lessen the impact of the lockdown on the residents of the State.

Some of the union leaders, in an interview with THE IMPACT, stated that they have been responsible for the daily upkeep of their members at various parks since they cannot work due to the lockdown and charged the state government to sustain the food programme and increase the number of beneficiaries.

They also commended members of the committee for carrying them along in their plans and pledged to support them while the programme last.
