The Chairman of the Imota Local Council Development Area, Hon. (Prince) Wasiu Adekunle Agoro has assured residents of Imota that the council would continue to provide food support for them during the lockdown ordered by the Federal and State Governments to contain the spread of CONVID-19.
Agoro gave the assurance while speaking with THE IMPACT on Friday, April 10, 2020, at the premises of CALEB University.
According to the council Chairman, the distribution exercise for food items provided for the residents by the council to cushion the effects of the lockdown, which was held on Thursday, April 9, 2020, in Imota, had aged, physically challenged, artisan, market association, Muslim community, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Hausa community, Igbo community, Benue community, Kogi community, Okada riders, Marwa riders, NURTW/RTEAN, traditional institution, Police, LNSC and Community Vigilance groups among others as beneficiaries.
Hon. Agoro stated that the distribution exercise went well without hitch and added that the council procured 1,500 food packs which were shared among various groups within Imota community.
“The council procured 1,500 packs of food items produced by Honeywell and were distributed to residents of Imota”, Hon. Agoro stated.
“All the vulnerable people in the town were given the packs. Also, people living with disability and aged residents among many others also received the packs. We also gave some Hausa labourers who live on wages but due to the lockdown, are unable to feed themselves and families.
“This is going to be a continuous exercise. This is the first phase. In the next couple of days, we are going to repeat the exercise in other reach more people”, Imota LCDA Council Chairman assured.
The Council helmsman also stated that the lockdown directive in Imota LCDA achieved total compliance due to sensitization exercise by the council on the danger of the deadly Coronavirus.
“Immediately the President gave the directive that Lagos State and other parts of the country should be locked down and was also restated by the governor of the state, Imota people took heed of the directive. Everybody stayed at home. The compliance level was total and still very much in force”, he stated.
“We have been able to enlightened them at the council level on the danger of COVID – 19 and how the disease is ravaging our country and entire world. In order to avoid contacting it in Imota LCDA, my people complied fully”.
Hon. Agoro stated that food interventions are way of encouraging residents to continue to obey government’s directives and avoid contacting the virus.
“That is why we are encouraging and supporting them with stimulus packages so that the hardship will not be too much on them.
“We are experiencing this for the first in the history of the world and, it came suddenly. What we are having now is a new experience. The social distancing, washing of hands and using of sanitizer are the new normal ways to follow in preventing COVID – 19 in our community.
“My people are taken all these seriously and this is due to the enlightenment the council has been able to carried out in this community. The compliance level is very high”, he stated.
