The fourth edition of ReadySetWork, RSW, initiative by the Lagos State Government kicked off on Saturday, November 23,, 2019 with strict warning to the participants to be guided by the RSW rules or get disqualified from the programme.
The programme which would continue for the next 12 Saturdays of 6 weeks interactive training session and 6 week on line session within the campuses of Lagos State University, LASU Ojo and Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu was flagged off at both institutions.
The students were advised to play by the set of rules tagged “The Rule of Seven” meant to guide the overall conduct of the participants throughout the period of the RSW.
The Consultant to the State Government on RSW, Sade Oshun who addressed the RSW students at LASU campus, encouraged the students to make punctuality their hallmarks, stressing that lateness reduces the chances of the students from graduating at the end of the programme.
“Part of the cardinal message being championed by the RSW is punctuality and discipline. Each session starts by 7:15am every Saturday and ends by 5pm daily, anyone that comes in later than 7:15am or leaves earlier before 5pm stands the chance of forfeiting his/her participation in this programme,’ the Consultant explained.
She said that the various sessions for the programme would start with training on a changed orientation and students’ perspectives of white collar jobs, the Nigeria Labour market, Industry Statistics, What potential employers are looking for in employees and How potential employees can make themselves presentable to prospective employers among others.
She underscored the fact that there are lots of people still getting good jobs based on competence and good character contrary to the belief that good jobs are only available on connection basis.
Citing the instances of some former students of the institution who were offered good jobs by their employers after completing their internship, the Consultant maintained that good attitude and dedication to job were not negotiable in gaining employment.
She added that the RSW programme, apart from empowering and expanding the horizon of the participants, also seeks to instill discipline, good job ethics and comportment into the consciousness of the participants.
According to her, any of the participants who find it difficult to abide by the provisions of RSW would also find it hard to cope with the demands of the job market because the initiative is in sync with what obtains in the global job markets.
The participating schools in the 2019 edition of RSW are final year students of Lagos State University, LASU, Lagos State Polytechnic, LASPOTECH, Lagos State College of Nursing Igando and CALEB University.
