In continuation of the sensitisation programme for 2019 Ready.Set.Work, RSW, programme which started at Lagos State University, LASU, Ojo on Thursday, the Special adviser to the Governor on Education, Barr. Tokunbo Wahab on Friday disclosed that 2,000 final year students of Lagos State Polytechnic, LASPOTECH, will also benefit from the initiative.
Addressing the students today at the Ikorodu campus of the institution, the Special Adviser, who was represented by the Director of Accounts, Office of the Special Adviser on Education, Mrs. Lola Akinsola stated that the 2,000 beneficiaries will be drawn from both Ordinary and Higher National Diploma students of the institution.
The Special Adviser noted that with the addition of 2000 beneficiaries from LASPOTECH, the total number of beneficiaries for the 2019 R.S.W initiative will grow to 5,000 students from LASU and LASPOTECH.
He reiterated the present administration’s commitment to quality education up to the tertiary level, urging the students to be attentive and serious about the programme.
In his address, the Rector of LASPOTECH, Mr. Samuel Sogunro, represented by the Deputy Rector Academics, Mr. Olumide Metilelu, expressed delight at the significant impact of the R.S.W programme, especially to LASPOTECH, stressing that students from the institution benefited immensely from the initiative in the past.
Metilelu thanked the Lagos State government for selecting the institution as one of the learning centres for the program while also emphasising the readiness of the institution to host the 2019 edition of the R.S.W event.
He recalled that the institution was adjudged the best R.S.W learning centre during the 2017 edition, assuring that LASPOTECH is set to surpass its past performances in previous programmes.
In his words, “It is pertinent to state that in 2017 LASPOTECH centre was adjudged the best learning centre of the R.S.W, we are set to do it again.”
Also speaking at the event, the Program Coordinator of R.S.W, Mrs. Folashade Oshun informed the students that the initiative was conceived out the realisation that “the world that we live in today has moved beyond certificates because employers are now looking for skills and not necessarily certificates.”
Oshun revealed that the program is slated for 12 Saturdays of intensive training, stressing that there are additional innovations that will come with this year’s edition of RSW.
“This year, we will be making use of hybrid learning experience which will consist of assignments that will be uploaded directly online. This is because the State government wants to accelerate the pace of development in higher education by deepening the process of learning accessible through technology,” the Coordinator stated.
She added that there will be a Career Fair at the end of the training to expose participants to corporate organisations for internship programs which could lead to automatic employment or serve as a platform to build young entrepreneurs.
Ready.Set.Work is an employability and entrepreneurship program aimed at preparing final year students for immediate entry into the workforce as employees and employers of labour by equipping participants with the market-aligned knowledge, soft skills, business tools, and a mindset reorientation to the world of work.
