The Institute of Criminological Studies and Security Management of Nigeria (ICSSM) has inducted 7 outstanding personalities as fellows, three as full members and another three as associates.
The 2019 edition of the institute’s induction and award ceremony was held at the Oteju hall of the Ikorodu town hall on Saturday, September 14, 2019, and was well-attended.
Elder Obukaroro Ohwoataike Ovadje, a retired Assistant Director, Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), Chief (Col) Reuben Igwebuike Nwako (Rtd.), Director, Capital Security and Surveillance, Col. Mike Abayomi Ogunlade (Rtd.), the Chief Security Officer, Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu, Mr Odunlami Davidson Afolorunsho, Chief Security Officer, Prince (Hon.) Bakare Waidi Abiodun, CEO, Prince Wajabk Integrated Services, Mr Richard Olukayode Efunbote, Consultant and facilitator, Law Enforcement Training Institute (LETI), Mr Oyelakin Joel Idowu, Director, Lekereeb Ventures and Mr Rapahel Hyacinth O. Nwabueze, the Divisional Police Officer, Ipakodo, Ikorodu, were inducted as fellows of the institute.
Inducted as full members were Mr Ogunbona Muyiwa Ademola, Mr Hitler Moses Iwengiwe and SP. Olufemi O. Ibitokun while Mrs Omoniyi Oluwatoyin Comfort, Mrs Ibitayo Maria Ibukunoluwa and Mr Asu Abang Edmond were inaugurated as associates.
Dr Abrifor, the Registrar of ICSSM, while welcoming the guests , stated that, “the body is a professional body for Criminologists and Security management practitioners who engage in specialized and strategic investigation of crime and crime control, effective security communication skills and efficient security studies.
He added that the vision of the body is, “To be a world-class security professional body that engage in the regulation and standardization of the practice of Criminology and Security Studies in Nigerians and Africans at large”.
He informed the gathering that security is everyone’s business and called for all hands to be on deck to ensure that our society is safe.
Also speaking at the event, Mrs Nwobodo Ijeoma Blessing, Lagos State ICSSM Coordinator and DOS, Victory Joy Management , said the newly inducted members are individuals that have met the high standard set by the institute and distinguished themselves.
While congratulating the new inductees, she enjoined them to continue to contribute to the growth of the institute and security in the country.
Mrs Nwobodo thanked guests for being part of ICSSM success story and stated that when people are security conscious, they can avoid situations that could expose them to dangers.
Dr Osundeyi Mathew O. , while delivering a lecture titled, “State of the nation and security challenges: The way forward” , stated that, “A nation can only grow when socio-economic and political activities are flanked by adequate security architecture. People will relate peacefully, business activities will thrive and political activities will be devoid of thuggery and unprecedented shedding of blood.
“When the economy of a country is dwindling , the citizens will find it difficult to get means of livelihood and this may prompt them to engage in criminal activities” , he stated while establishing the linkage between security situation of a country and its economic situation.
He listed corruption, unemployment, inadequate and dilapidated infrastructure, leadership and inadequate funding of law enforcement and security operatives among others as problems confronting Nigeria.
While proffering solutions to Nigeria’s security and economic challenges, Dr Osundeyi called for creation of jobs for the teeming youths, reviewing of the curricular of all tertiary institutions to accommodate more entrepreneurial skills acquisition that will make graduates employable, adequate funding of security agencies in the country and training for security personnel, effective community policing and forest guard, focusing on agricultural and other non-oil mineral resources, encouraging urban –rural drift and teaching of security education in schools among others.
