National Youth Games: Lagos Wins Male Football Gold Medal

Mr Oluwatoyin Gafaar, DG, Lagos State Sports Commission

Just like their female counterparts, the Lagos Male football team, today, beat Team Delta by a lone goal to win the gold medal in the finals of the National Youth Games tournament played at the ‘Maracana’ Stadium, University of Ilorin, Kwara State.

Team Lagos’ representatives were in control of the game from the start, missing many goals that could have put them ahead in the first half of the encounter. However, the lads from Lagos State got an advantage to nod home their first corner kick of the game through Aruna Hassan who wore jersey number 13.

Hassan’s swift header left the Delta State goalkeeper unawares and sprawling to save the ball but it was too late as the female referee whistled to register the goal for the Lagos boys.

The scorer of the lone goal, Hassan, expressed delight that the victory was a moment of joy for him and other teammates saying, “I am so happy because this is the first time I will compete at a big tournament like this. I want to appreciate the Lagos State Sports Commission and the Lagos FA for the opportunity given us to represent Lagos at the Youth Games”.

Reacting to the victory over Team Delta, the Chairman, Lagos State Sports Commission, Dr. Kweku Adedayo Tandoh commended the team for displaying a high level of soccer artistry that gave them the golden victory.

“This is another testimony to show that we are on the right track in Lagos State. These boys are fantastic. I want to commend the Lagos State Football Association led by Barrister Seyi Akinwunmi”, he said.

He added that “In Lagos, we are mindful of our athletes’ future. That is why we combined both academics and sports for them. I’m so happy for the team and for this football Gold”.
