The Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), Lagos State Polytechnic chapter, on Sunday, announced the death of Mr Owolabi Sunday, one of its 38 union leaders and members arrested and imprisoned recently over the protracted crisis in the institution .
The union, in a released statement, announced the untimely death of the union leader who, according to the union, had been sick and placed on drugs since his return from the Ikoyi prison where he was remanded along other union members following their arraignment before the Chief Magistrate at Ebute-Metta Magistrate Court on Thursday, July 11,2019.
Late Owolabi and others were arrested in the early hours of Thursday, July 11,2019 and were first detained at the Shagamu road police station in Ikorodu before being taken to Panti where they were said to have been interrogated and arraigned before a Magistrate Court.
They were remanded at Ikoyi and Kirikiri for days following the inability of the union to complete their bail conditions and were only released following the intervention of the state government.
The union alleged that late Owolabi died as a result of the torture and maltreatment meted out to him and others at the prison where they were kept.
The release read thus:
“It’s with heavy heart that the NON TEACHING STAFF OF LAGOS STATE PLOTECHNIC announce the passing away of MR OWOLABI SUNDAY, one of the LASPOTECH 38 sent to prison for no just reason.
“He had been on the sick bed with series of drug prescriptions since returning from IKOYI PRISON as a result an EXECUTIVE ORDER from the government masterminded by LASPOTECH MANAGMENT HEADED BY TYRANIC RECTOR IN PERSON OF MR SAMUEL SOGUNRO. It is very unfortunate to receive the sad news early hours of today.
“We know the Management of LASPOTECH will be so glad that one of the UNION LEADERS is dead now as a result of THE TORTURE AND MALTREATMENT METED OUT TO THEM BY PAID PRISONERS AT IKOYI PRISON”.
