About six students of Ipakodo Junior Community School, Ipakodo in Ikorodu West Local Council Development Area (LCDA) suffered varying degree of injuries as the wall and ceiling of their classroom collapsed during lecture period.
The sad incident occurred today, Tuesday, June 25, 2019.
The affected classroom was an old structure built by the first civilian governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande in the 80s.
THE IMPACT gathered that the wall collapsed on JSS 2 and 3 students during lecture hours.
When our reporters visited the school around 3.30pm, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) had already condoned off the affected structure and other buildings built by the Jakande administration with red tape dated today and marked them for demolition .
While some sources stated that death were recorded, others, especially students, told our reporters that no death was recorded in the incident.
Confirming the incident to our reporters that visited the school, a female student she stated that :
“Yes, it is true. The wall fell on some students and they were badly injured. They have been rushed to an unknown hospital ”, she stated while pointing to the collapsed wall.
Another student, who also spoke with our reporters , stated that :
“That is the wall that collapsed today on the students. The one down there (pointing to another direction) collapsed some time back. About five students were affected and another sustained injuries when the ceiling also collapsed.
Our reporters were told that the principal of the junior school was not around when they visited.
When contacted, the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Ikorodu, Comrade Fakolade Oluwafemi, stated that he was not aware of the incident.
Attempt to reach the Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary, Education District II, Maryland and the Chairman, Ikorodu West Local Council Development Area, proved abortive as at the time of filing this report.
