Comrade Semiu Akinlawon FASASI, the Chairman of the embattled Non Academic Staff Union (NASU), Lagos State Polytechnic Chapter, has thrown his weight behind the reintroduction of the monthly sanitation exercise in Lagos State by the administration of Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu .
He stated that the reintroduction of the exercise will rejuvenate the consciousness of Lagosians to a cleaner environment.
He made this stance while contributing to a discourse on the proposed re-introduction of monthly sanitation exercise on THE IMPACT WhatsApp platform.
The Unionist also condemned the immediate past administration in the state, led by Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, for cancelling the exercise.
“The return of Environmental Sanitation exercise will rejuvenate the consciousness of Lagosians that a cleaner Lagos is KEY! Cleaniness they say is next to Godliness! Its return will also put the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) in a very serious corner to take the bull by the horns because as a matter of fact, it will be made compulsory that all refuses generated from the exercise ‘MUST’ be carted away same day!
“We haven’t gotten to that level of reasonability that the Government will leave the environment to the free will of Lagosians to handle, particularly if we consider the fact that a good number still disobey restrictions on BRT Lanes!
“For me, former Governor, Mr Akinwumi Ambode is a complete misplacement in all facets of the Lagos State existence! Cancelling the monthly sanitation exercise is to undo one of the many good works and policies of his precedesors for personal selfish ambitions! His administration destroyed all that is good in Lagos State – from education, environment, public service, health, justice system, economies, social welfare, mention it! Never! Affliction shall never rise again!
He stated that many Lagosians, including literate and educated, require enforcement to comply with environmental regulations.
“There are a few of us that know the dynamics of governing Lagosians and Nigerians in general. Unfortunately, those of us that are ‘educated’ or ‘literate’ are the most disobedient in the society! You can imagine a Lagosian riding Toyota Prado on his way to work throwing wastes by the road sides!
“Because some of us live in good environment, we think those in the ghettos are inconsequential! Alas, we shall bear the worst part of the brunt.
The NASU Chairman stated that the State needs to bring back the sanitation exercise to ensure a cleaner Lagos.
“Lagos State is no doubt a mega city, but methodology in governance is a function of many variables which go beyond just talking! We need the return of the exercise to bring to bear our lost glory of a cleaner Lagos”.
He commended the new governor for what he termed “his emotional intelligence”.
“Governance requires a reasonable level of emotional intelligence which the READY-TO-SERVE Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has demonstrated as he hits the ground running. His statement on the return of the monthly sanitation exercise is as a result of feedback from Lagosians and his personal observations”.
