Hon. Wasiu Ayodeji Adeshina, Chairman, Ikorodu Local Government, has called for the total eradication of all forms of child abuse in the society, describing the menace as traumatic on the victims.
The council boss stated this during the inauguration of the implementation committee on Child’s Rights, a programme of the Lagos State Ministry of Youths and Social Development in conjunction with the Ikorodu Local Government.
The event was held at the Ikorodu Local Secretariat hall on Wednesday, May 15, 2019.
Hon. Adeshina, in his address at the event, stated that :
“We should note that the effects of child abuse are very traumatic on the victims, ranging from mental illness to risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases.
“In view of this, therefore, I want to implore all parents and care-givers to compliment the efforts of the government to achieve a total eradication of this inhuman act in our society by providing adequate protection and responsibilities for the care of our children.
The chairman also called for more awareness for child abuse which he described as societal problem.
“I also enjoin everyone to support the government in eradicating abuse of our children by creating more awareness about this social vice and work towards its total eradication from our communities”.
He listed forms of child abuse as physical, sexual, emotional and psychological abuses.
Hon. Adeshina reminded the gathering that the Child Right Act was officially passed into law in 2003 by the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo and was subsequently enacted in Lagos State in 2007.
