The protest that rocked the Ikorodu main campus of the Lagos State Polytechnic on Monday (yesterday) was against the implementation of the Alignment of Nomenclature, it has been revealed.
Aggrieved staff members had laid siege on the campus chanting solidarity songs to stop the management from implementing the directive of the State Government.
The institution’s Deputy Registrar (Information), Mr Lanre Kuye, while speaking on phone with our reporter on Tuesday (today), on the alleged demotion and pay cut by the management of the institution, stated that the management is acting on the directive of the State Government in serving members of both academic and non-academic staff that are affected by the alignment letters to stop what he called ‘illegal’ payment from their earnings.
“The Rector and the institution management were directed by the State Government to commence the implementation of the Alignment of Nomenclature.
“The implication is that the management has been compelled to pay the correct realignment of salaries. With this, if we have been paying you wrongly, we are going to reverse it. With this development, you should expect staff members not to take things lightly. That was what caused yesterday’s (Monday) protest.
Contrary to the earlier report that the aggrieved staff members laid siege on the members of the management staff while holding a meeting at the institution’s Chamber, THE IMPACT gathered the meeting was being held by the heads of tertiary institutions in Lagos State.
A member of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), LASPOTECH Chapter, who stated that he is affected by the Alignment of Nomenclature implementation, denied the involvement of the academic staff in the protest.
He also confirmed that the siege was not on the management staff of the institution.
“Where did you see management meeting? The heads of tertiary institutions in Lagos state were the ones holding the meeting.
“Where did you see members of the Academic staff protesting? I had three classes yesterday and I just finished a class now (today).
Efforts to speak with the leadership of the union proved abortive as at the press time.
