Businessmen and residents of Odogunyan community in Ikorodu North Local Council Development Area of Ikorodu Division of Lagos State, Southwest, Nigeria, yesterday (Sunday),  suffered a huge loss as rain destroyed goods worth several millions of naira and rendered many streets impassable for the inhabitants.

THE IMPACT gathered that the rain,  which was the first to fall in Ikorodu in 2019, caused heavy flood which made the main road and many streets in the community a no-go area for human and vehicular movements while many shops were equally flooded with several goods destroyed.

Eye witnesses told THE IMPACT that shop owners in Odogunyan suffered most as bags of rice, beans, garri, beds, electronics and other items were destroyed by flood which entered many shops.

It was also gathered that most of the affected shop owners returned to their shops on Sunday after Church services only to discovered that their goods have been destroyed by the flood.

It has, however, been alleged that the untold havoc wrecked on the community and shop owners by the rain was due to the lack of drainage systems and the ongoing construction of the Ikorodu-Shagamu road.

While others are saying it was due to blocked drainage systems in other areas

Most affected areas are Oduyebo, Tenibegiloju and Ojuemuren Streets among others

In a related development, residents of Ikorodu have called on the Federal Government and the contractor handling the Ikorodu-Shagamu road project to intensify action on the road construction before  the rain becomes incessant which could  wreck further havoc on lives and properties of residents.

Some of the victims of the rainfall have also called on the government to assist  them with compensation to enable them continue with their businesses .
