The celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH), Ikorodu on Wednesday, November 21, 2018, provided the foremost institution of vocational and technological studies in Nigeria, an opportunity to exhibit inventions and other products by its various departments.
Coincidentally, the exhibition took place on the same day the anniversary lecture, which was titled, ‘Repositioning Technical Education for Technological Development and Food Security’ and delivered by the Chairman, United Bank for Africa Group and the Founder, The Tony Elumelu Foundation, My Tony O. Elumelu, CON, was held.
At the lecture, the guest lecturer, host institution, government and the public agreed that there is need to reposition the technical, vocational and technological education in the country and LASPOTECH, as a foremost institution, was tasked to lead the revolution in that regard.
It is to this extent that the Deputy Registrar of the institution and Public Information Officer, Mr Lanre Kuye, stated, in a brief interview with THE IMPACT, that the exhibition was to show the world that LASPOTECH is in tune with the demands of its immediate society, state and the country in the area of advancing technology to ensure food security and advancing the socio-economic factors.
Various equipment that were invented and fabricated by the School of Engineering of the institution were exhibited for the public to see and appreciate.
Some of these innovations were Fruit Extractor, Pneumatic Can Crusher, Maize Shelling, Chicken Slicer, Intelligent Traffic and Light Chromatography.
The Art and Industrial Design Department exhibited artworks like ‘Majidun’ River by Orilowo Henry (2018), Kitchen Utensils by Mokunbi Mojeed (2018) and Picture by Apena A.N (2015) among many others.
On display by the LASPOTECH Consult were products being produced in the institution such as sachet water, table water, notebooks and pamphlets.
The Department of Crop Production and Horticulture showcased packaged ‘Garri’ (Cassava flakes) and other food items, while Food Technology department showcased the LASPOTECH bread which has been acclaimed as one of the best in Ikorodu.
From the Office Technical Management were Calendars, Flyers, Complimentary Cards among many others while on display at the Entrepreneurship Education ( EED) stand were Beads, Liquid Soap, ‘Adire’ (Dye clothes) and more.
At the Mass Communication Department stand were newspapers and magazines that are being produced by the department as well as customized ‘adire’ clothes, t-shirts and caps, and frames among others.
The Rector of the School, Mr Samuel Sogunro, after the lecture, led the representative of the guest lecturer, Chairman, Governing Council of the institution, guests, principal officers as well as students of the school in touring the exhibition stands.
