Another opportunity for the teeming unemployment youths and those employed but are still willing to acquire vocational skills, opened up in Ikorodu on Thursday, May 24, 2018, as the 4th edition of the Hon. S.O.B Agunbiade’s Skill Acquisition Programme kicked off.
The skill vocational training, which is expected to last for 4 weeks, started on Thursday with about 100 of the expected 150 targeted beneficiaries at the Constituency office of the lawmaker located along the Obafemi Awolowo Way, Oke – Ota Ona, Ikorodu, where the past three editions were held.
The programme is being facilitated by Hon. Agunbiade, the Majority Leader, Lagos State House of Assembly and sponsored by the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.
This year’s edition is focusing on helping the beneficiaries develop skills in six vocational areas namely Catering & Hotel Management, Make-Up & Beads, Hair Dressing, Soap & Pomade, Tie & Dye and Event Decoration.
Participants for the training were drawn from the six Local Government and Local Council Development Areas in Ikorodu division.
Speaking with Mr Soneye Samson, Personal Assistant to Hon. Sanai Agunbiade and the Coordinator of the programme, he stated that about 200 participants are expected for the 4 week training programme.
He added that the programme is another viable way of ensuring that youths in Ikorodu division are meaningfully engaged and made productive.
Responses From Participants On The Opening Day Of The Programme :
Master Sodiq Bisiriyu (Event Decoration Trainee)
“We are being introduced to the decoration business and how to make ribbons. We also made party bowl and magical braid”.
Miss Halimot Sekoni (Hair Dressing Trainee)
“We were taught and did practical works on twisting, weaving, zip-up, tissue-braid and susu braid”.
Mrs Sikirat Bakare (Bead Making)
“We were taught how to make bead and ball. We were told that the process always starts with 5 beads and close with one of the five beads. After that, we were also told that we are to follow the next step with four beads from which we are also to take one in closing it.
We were also told to always endeavour to close any space.
So far, I have learnt that beads can be used to make errings, pendants, ring and bangles”
Miss Abioye Adedoyin (Catering & Hotel Management)
“We learnt about the importance of balanced diet and the imperativeness of taking water early in the morning, which the instructor said helps in detoxicating our system.
We also learnt how to make popcorn with stove and prawn crackers which were produced and shared with participants”.
Alhaja Odofin Monsurat (Pomade & Soap)
“We were introduced to the basics of pomade and soap making. We were also taught how to make liquid soap. We also learnt that costic soda is ration 1 to 3, while that of Soda ash is 1 to 4”.
Miss Omotosho Fadayomi (Tie & Dye)
“Today, we were introduced to Adire (tie and dye) making, safety precautions and types of dye. We were also taught the types of chemical being used in making Adire such as costic soda and hydroxulphite (powder); dying process; measurement used in dying and types of clothes used in dying”.
